COVID Protocols and Information

Due to the prevalence of COVID-19 in our area, processes for evaluating illness in school may be a little different this year. The Minnesota Department of Health has released a document explaining the symptoms of COVID and what to do if students and staff in school show any symptoms. Listed below are the “Less Common” and “More Common” Symptoms associated with COVID, and the process of evaluating and responding to them.

Less Common” Symptoms of COVID: sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, muscle pain, excessive fatigue, new onset of severe headache, new onset of nasal congestion or runny nose.

More Common” Symptoms of COVID: fever of 100.4 or higher, new onset and/or worsening cough, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell.

If a student presents to the nurse/office with any number of new onset (not related to allergies or pre-existing condition) symptoms, we will be following the MN Dept. of Health’s recommendations for whether or not they should remain in school.

  • One "less common" symptom that is mild = child can attend/stay in school.
  • One “less common" symptom that is moderate to severe = child should stay home/be sent home, and can return to school when symptom-free for 24 hours. (Fever-free without medication for 24 hours.)
  • Two "less common" symptoms or One "more common" symptom = child should stay home/be sent home,  siblings and household contacts should stay home as well.  You then have the choice to seek evaluation and/or a COVID test from your healthcare provider or not. The Decision Tree can help you determine the next steps you can take in regards to medical evaluation, testing, and return to school; or you can call your healthcare provider for assistance in making your decision.
