Story of the Year was formed in St. Louis in 1995.  The current members are Dan Marsala, Ryan Phillips, Philip Sneed, Adam Russel, and Josh Wills.

The band was originally named Big Blue monkey, but changed their name to Story of the Year in 2001 because a blues group had already taken their original name.

They spent 7 years as a local band, recording demos.  They signed with Maverick Records in 2002, and recorded their first album, Page Avenue, in September 2003.  The first single was, “Until The Day I Die”, and received some radio airplay and sold thousands of copies worldwide.  The second single was titled, “Anthem of Our Dying Day”, whose music video was directed by Mr. Hahn of Linkin Park.  The album Page Avenue has now sold over 500,00 copies worldwide.  The single “And the Hero Will Drown” was featured on the soundtrack to the multi-format game Need for Speed: Underground.

In 2004, the band toured with Linkin Park on the Meteora World Tour, along with P.O.D. and Hoobastank.  They were also featured in Vans Warped Tour, and featured in the Vans Warped Tour documentary.

They released a CD/DVD combo of live performances and touring video titled Live in the Lou/Basssassins on May 10, 2005.  It was a hit amongst their fans and certified Gold by the RIAA.

On October 11, 2005, they released their second album, In the Wake of Determination, which unfortunately had only sold 150,698 albums as of March 5, 2006, and failed to achieve the gold certification their two previous releases had.

In May of 2006 they finished a tour across Australia with Emery and Flogging Molly.

Currently, the band is working on their third album, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2008.  They have also abandoned their five-year relationship with Maverick and signed with Epitaph Records.
